Lipodystrophy

Lipodystrophy is a syndrome associated with HIV. It is a condition of fat loss or/and fat gain. Many people who are living with HIV have one or more symptoms associated with Lipodystrophy such as:

  • Peripheral Fat Loss- loss of fat to the legs and arms, buttocks and most devastating of all, the face.
  • Central Fat gain- Abdominal fat gain and fat gain in the breast tissue, especially in females with HIV associated lipodystophy.

Facial Lipoatrophy is the single most difficult symptom to live with for someone living with HIV. It is the one area of the body that cannot be covered and therefore causes increased anxiety over the risk of dislosure of their HIV status. This clinic provides support and experience in the treatment of Facial Lipoatrophy.
