Collagen

What it is: An extract from cowhide similar to human collagen, it's a protein material commonly found in skin. It is injected into facial lines and wrinkles to give a smoother appearance. Bovine collagen has been used for over 25 years in the cosmetic industry and there are several types available.

Zyderm I: For very fine lines such as those around the eyes.

Zyderm II: For most other facial lines.

Xyplast: For deep lines and lip enhancement - an allergy test is required.

• Procedure time: 30 minutes - 1 hour.
• Down time: Slight swelling 24-48 hours.
• Lasting effects: 2-6 months.
• Risks: Slight swelling and bruising for 24-48 hours.
• Pain: Slight discomfort from the injection, topical anaesthetic cream can be used on the skin and/or ice if necessary.
